Pool and Patio Construction Process
When you invest in Old Town Pool and Patio, you are investing in quality. All of our new pool construction projects start with an initial consultation so that our pool designers can get a better understanding of what you want and need. Then, using our 3D backyard design software, we create a beautiful virtual walkthrough of your backyard with the new pool.
This will help you see what your new backyard vacation spot will look like and make any important changes before we ever break ground. This saves our clients a lot of time and frustration during the construction process!
Pool Build Process
Once the design is finalized, we move onto the construction phase. This entails the following steps which will take about 8-10 weeks to complete:
1. Pool Excavation
The first step in the pool building process is to excavate the earth to create a base for the pool. Depending on how complex and big your pool is, this will take our team anywhere from a few hours to a few days.
2. Laying the Steel Cage
Old Town Pool and Patio is proud to build beautiful concrete pools that boast longevity. However, due to the inflexibility of the material, concrete pools need extra support. This is done by crafting a steel cage that will reinforce the pool, adding to its longevity. This process can take a few days.
3. Installing the Concrete Shell
Once the steel cage is set in place, we then spray in the gunite or shotcrete mixture. This will create the pool shell as the concrete will adhere to the steel cage, creating a durable structure that allows the pool to start taking its shape. This process will take about a day or two to complete.
4. Curing Process
Once the concrete has been placed, we need to give it time to strengthen and harden. This process is known as the curing process and will take about 28 days to completely cure. During this time, we will leave detailed instructions on how to care for your cement shell by watering it to allow it to become hardier and more impact resistant.
5. Tiling and Coping
Once the concrete shell of your pool has been treated, it is time to add the pool tiles. Old Town Pool and Patio offers a wide variety of beautiful pool tiles for you to choose from, allowing you to further customize the look of your new pool.
As we are installing the tiles of your choice, we also install a concrete or stone border around the perimeter of your pool to create a seamless transition between the pool and the patio. This process is known as coping and it helps protect the ground around your pool by preventing excess water from getting absorbed by the ground. Our tile and coping process takes about 3 days to 2 weeks depending on the size and complexity of your pool.
6. Building Your Pool’s Patio
After the tile and coping installation process, we then move to build the base for your pool’s patio. This is accomplished by installing compacting stone. The compacting stone creates a watertight seal underneath your pool’s patio, further protecting your pool.
Once the compacting stone is in place, we can then create a gorgeous patio to compliment your new pool. We have lots of patio options for you to choose from, so do not hesitate to ask! A beautiful new patio will elevate your pool’s design to the next level.

7. Installing the Plaster
The final part of the pool construction process is adding in the plaster. The plaster is a mixture of cement, sand, marble dust, pigment, and water. This mixture gives your pool its smooth surface and further strengthens its structure.
Our team installs the plaster using a hose pump and compressed air to get it evenly dispersed on the surface of your pool. We then take a trowel and smooth the mixture out, ensuring there are no bumps or blemishes. The result is a breathtakingly beautiful pool that can serve your family for many years.
